Born in Dublin, Ireland, Michael A. E. Ramsay, MD, FRCA, attended London Hospital Medical College in London, England, and received his medical degree in 1968. Then, he served his internship (1969), residency (1972), and fellowship (1974) at London Hospital. Upon relocating to the United States, Dr. Ramsay received board certification in anesthesiology from the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Ramsay is well known for having developed the first sedation scoring system for intensive care patients, i.e., the Ramsay Sedation Scale, which is widely used throughout the world. Dr. Ramsay is an active lecturer at an international and national level on topics such as liver transplantation, sedation, opioid-induced respiratory depression, and other patient safety issues. Over the years, he has given more than 300 invited presentations and lectures, has published over 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, as well as multiple chapters in major textbooks, as well as numerous abstracts and original articles. He remains involved as a principal investigator in several clinical research projects on topics such as the role of nitric oxide in ameliorating the reperfusion injury in liver transplantation. He also is a Principal Investigator of several NIH-funded clinical trials to improve the outcomes of trauma victims.
